One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake

Well, The Queens of Fennbirn are at it again, but this time the stakes are higher, the insanity is crazier, and the queens are going to have to decide to kill or be killed. There may be three queens, but there is only one throne.

Three Dark Crowns was a seat-of-your-pans high-stakes fantasy. One Dark Throne is more subtle. It creeps along like a poisonous serpent, with an insidious vibe that really gets in your head. I was so creeped out by this book, mostly because Katharine has come back from the pit of death with a crazed death wish for her sisters and some serious multiple personality disorder that is messing her UP. I want to say more about her crazy freaking story, but I don’t think there’s much to say that isn’t spoiler-filled. Of the three queens, Katharine is now officially my least favorite. She has become evil with a capital E and while that brought a lot of great tension to this book, I am not her fan.one dark throne

Arsinoe and Mirabella continue to build upon the glimmers of memory and connection that they shared in book one, and I can’t decide which of them I like better. Arsinoe was my favorite in Three Dark Crowns by a long shot because she’s so wild and real. I love that she doesn’t care about looking the part, that she doesn’t really care what others think, and that she is fiercely loyal to her friends. Plus, Billy is a sweetheart who wouldn’t hurt a fly (not to mention, he’s a terrible chef but that doesn’t even matter because no way is he going to let anyone get poisoned while he’s on watch, it’s cute even if it might but super confusing right now until you read the book).

Mirabella faces real betrayal in this book – more than any of the others I think she gets the short end of the stick. Trust me, if you like Mira you will be OUTRAGED at what they do to her in this book. Again, I want to say more about it but I can’t because then I would be ruining the ending and you would probably hate me.

I didn’t know going into this book that there are going to be TWO MORE BOOKS now, but I wish I had because that ending stressed me the heck out. I just need to know what’s going to happen next.
